The “Old” Way of Learning Guitar:

If you’ve ever tried to pick up learning guitar, you’ve probably heard at least once that you need to learn these four chords first:

Popular Guitar Chords
These four chords comprise most popular music and lay a great foundation for playing many songs right out of the gate. It’s sufficiently true that if you learn the 20% of most common chords, you can play 80% of the music out there.

Unfortunately, many beginners learning these chords become frustrated and discouraged after realizing
– it’s difficult to switch quickly between the chords and play a song smooth & continuously
– the chords require flexibility in the hands that haven’t yet been developed
– fingers tend to unintentionally touch or rest on other adjacent strings

The instruction below may provide a great way to reduce pain points so you start seeing progress in hours, rather than days or weeks. With quicker positive feedback and early wins, you may find it easier to stick with learning guitar–even if you’ve been unsuccessful in the past.

The “New” Way of Learning Guitar: Play Chords in “The Pocket”

Rather than learning the traditional G/C/D/E chords first, learning another set of chords (that we’ll call “The Pocket”) may overcome many beginners’ pain points. Here are some advantages to these new, modified chords that are about to be introduced:
– the pocket requires less flexibility and only stretches across two guitar frets
– the pocket anchors your pinky and ring fingers into a fixed position, requiring less dexterity and a quicker transition between chords
– the pocket can also allow you play a high percentage of popular music while only learning a few chords (again, Pareto’s 80/20 rule)

What Are These New Chords?

The Pocket chords are:

How to play the chords

1) Start by placing your pinky on the “high e” string on the 3rd fret (that’s the string closest to the floor count 3 frets from the head of the guitar), and then placing your ring finger just above it on the “b string” (second string from the floor) also on the 3rd fret. (click here to enlarge image)
2) From there, cycle your pointer and middle finger through the chord progression animated above. (click here to enlarge image)
3) Play until you are comfortable. Try varying the order in which you play the chords.

What songs can I play with these chords?

In some ways, you are replacing the original four chords with slightly easier versions of themselves.

Although the chords may sound slightly different and won’t be 100% accurate to the original song, you may be able to play more songs, more smoothly, in less time, but at the expenses of some accuracy. It was once said about eating healthy, “The good diet you follow is better than the perfect diet you don’t.”

But more importantly, here are some songs written using the “Pocket” chords that you can start learning now.

[Verse]

G G/F# Em G/E G/F# G
You can hold her eggs But your basket has a hole
        G G/F# Em
You can lie between her legs And go lookin' for:
                G G/F# G
Tell her you're searching for her soul!
G G/F# Em G/E G/F# G
You can wait for ages and watch your compost turn to coal
   G G/F# Em G/E G/F# G
But time is contagious: Everybody's getting old.

G G/F# Em G/E G/F# G
You can sit on chimneys put some fire up your ass
           G G/F# Em G/E G/F# G
No need to know what you're doing or looking for but if any one should ask?
          G G/F# Em G/E G/F# G
Tell them I've been cooking coconut skins and we've been hanging out
          G G/F# Em G/E G/F# G
Tell them God just dropped by to forgive our sins and relieve us our doubt

CAPO 1

This is the first song off of ‘The Shade Of Poison Trees’. It’s a pretty simple song,

on purpose in order to make the sound match the cd recording.

THIS IS FOR THE RHYTHEM GUITAR MEANT TO BE PLAYED SOLO
